In 1999, the American Film Institute named her the seventh-greatest female screen legend of all time.
Photoplay was one of the first American film fan magazines. It was founded in 1911 in Chicago, the same year that Motion Picture Story, a magazine also directed at fans, began. In 1921 Photoplay established what is considered the first significant annual movie award. The magazine ceased publication in 1980.
